Meet the New Sports Medicine Fellow

Paul Echlin, M.D. is the new Sports Medicine Fellow for the Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Echlin completed his family practice residency at Wayne State University Detroit Medical Center in June 2003.

He received his medical degree from American University of the Caribbean Medical School, Monserrat, BWI. Having also studied in England, Canada, and the United States, Dr. Echlin has broadened his understanding of medicine in different cultures and in different settings.

His career choice to become a Primary Care physician with a Sports Medicine specialty was influenced by his elite athletic career. He competed as a nationally ranked oarsman and has a B.A. degree in physical education. He has participated in many hours of extracurricular sports medicine clinics, conference teaching, team/event coverage, and sports medicine conferences. His athletic experiences have given him a lifelong interest in competitive sport, fitness, and preventative medicine. The competition contributed to his individual development, giving him the physical and mental tools to succeed in the field of Primary Care Sports Medicine. His experiences also provided insights into the physical and psychological demands of sport, as well as its attendant medical conditions.

Dr. Echlin’s professional affiliations include the American Medical Association, American Association of Family Practice, Canadian Sports Medicine Association, and American Academy of Sports Medicine.

When he is not working, Dr. Echlin enjoys running, movies, and weight training.
