About this Course

Service Activities
Students will be assigned to a Community Health Center clinic in Marion County. They will complete the two hour volunteer certification process at Wishard Hospital, which will teach them medically relevant concepts such as confidentiality and patient safety. Once a month students will be encouraged to meet as a group for interactive discussions on service learning topics such as: “What are the different types of service and how do the benefits differ for each of those types?,” “What are the hazards of service and how do you overcome those?,” and. “What do service and social action have in common? What is the difference?”.

The course instructor and a Service Learning Assistant will work with the clinics and the community to develop a selection of potential service projects for each site. Throughout the semester, students will work closely with the clinic and the community to identify, develop, and implement a project that will serve an unmet need of the population. The course instructor and the Service Learning Assistant will meet regularly with the students, the clinic administrative staff, and the community organizations to mentor the student and monitor the projects.
