Family
Medicine is the medical specialty that provides continuing and
comprehensive healthcare for individuals and families. This specialty
integrates the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences. The scope
of Family Medicine encompasses all ages, sexes, each organ system, and
every disease entity. It is this combination that qualifies family
physicians to provide continuing and comprehensive medical care, health
maintenance and preventive services to each member of the family
regardless of sex, age or problem – be it biological, behavioral, or
social. These specialists, because of their background and interactions
with families, are best qualified to serve as the patient's advocate in
all health-related matters, including the appropriate use of
consultants, health services and community resources.
The Department of Family Medicine faculty, residents, and fellows provide comprehensive, high quality patient care at diverse practice sites including IU-Methodist Family Medicine Center, IU Family Medicine at OneAmerica® Tower, IU Center for Sports Medicine, additional out-patient sites, and inpatient service at Methodist Hospital. All measures indicate high patient satisfaction and inpatient service has the lowest mortality index, lowest average length of stay, and lowest readmission rate of any service at Methodist hospital.
