Azra Abdullah, M.B.B.S.
Sylhet Osmani Medical College
Azra Abdullah, M.B.B.S., received her medical degree from Sylhet Osmani Medical College in Sylhet, Bangladesh. She chose the IU Family Practice Residency because of its learning environment and because of the faculties, staff, and residents that she has met. Her main research and clinical interests are in women’s health. For the future, she plans to become a sincere and successful doctor. When not working, Dr. Abdullah enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and watching movies.

Yuliyan Donchev, M.D.
Medical University of Varna

Yuliyan Donchev, M.D., received his medical degree from the Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria. He chose the IU Family Medicine Residency due to its friendly atmosphere and faculty who are personally involved in teaching new residents. He also cites the well-balanced curriculum and future academic opportunities. Dr. Donchev’s clinical interests include psychiatry and behavioral medicine, while his research interests are public health and prevention. When he is not working, he enjoys hiking, basketball, traveling, and spending time with his family. Dr. Donchev is married and has a seven-year-old daughter.


Sofia Elahi, M.B.B.S.
Ayub Medical College
Sofia Elahi, M.B.B.S, received her medical degree from Ayub Medical College in Abbottabad, Pakistan. She chose the IU Family Medicine Residency because of the university setting, didactic teaching and its multicultural environment. She also likes how Indianapolis provides all the amenities of a big city and at the same time is not overwhelmingly large. Dr. Elahi’s clinical interests are office procedures and dermatology. She is married to a family physician and has a son and two daughters. Her future plan is to work with her husband in a group family practice office in Ontario, Canada. In her free time, Dr. Elahi enjoys spending time with her children, watching movies and traveling. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Khwaja Ahmed Hussain, M.B.B.S.
Kasturba Medical College
Khwaja Ahmed Hussain, M.B.B.S., received his medical degree Kasturba Medical College, Bangalore, India. He chose the IU Family Medicine Residency because he finds the team structure impressive and because of the opportunities for research. In medical school, he was a sportsman in cricket and field hockey and was on the college debating team. Dr. Hussain’s clinical interests are cardiology and sports medicine, while his research interests include stem cells and genetics. His future goals are to pursue academics and research in biomedical ethics, basic sciences, and public health issues. When he is not working, Dr. Hussain enjoys walking, traveling, bird watching, reading, and playing the Tabla, which is an Indian percussion instrument.

Dilum Illamperuma, M.D.
Ross University

Dilum Illamperuma, M.D., received his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine, Dominica, West Indies, and Bachelor of Science-Honors in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from York University, Canada. He chose the IU Methodist Family Medicine Residency for its opportunities in research and public health administration, excellent clinical facilities, extensive procedural training, good track record in passing boards, and the integration of behavioral science curriculum within the Residency. A member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Illamperuma plans to pursue his clinical interests in a hospital/group/community-based practice. When he is not working, he enjoys being with his family, playing music, and traveling.


Lasith Illamperuma, M.D.
Ross University
Lasith Illamperuma, M.D., received his medical degree from Ross University in Dominica, West Indies and an honors degree in biochemistry and chemistry from the University of Toronto. He chose the IU Family Practice Residency because it is a university program with a well-structured curriculum. The diversity of the Residency, recommendations from senior residents, the vision of the program director, his general impression of the Residency, and its location in Indianapolis also influenced him. A member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, he plans to pursue clinical interests in internal medicine and pediatrics in an urban-suburban community. When he is not working, Dr. Illamperuma enjoys playing music, traveling, and spending time with his wife, who is a resident in Internal Medicine.

Elzbieta Koslacz-Kolanko, M.D.
Slaska Akademia Medyczna
Elzbieta Koslacz-Kolanko, M.D., received her medical degree from Slaska Akademia Medyczna in Katowice, Poland. She chose the IU Family Practice Residency because it covers a wide spectrum of specialties, since she is interested in many fields of medicine, and because it offers opportunities for education and prevention. A member of the American Medical Association, Dr. Koslacz-Kolanko’s clinical interests include dermatology, women’s health, and prevention. Her long term goals are to become a family practitioner and have time for family. When she is not working, Dr. Koslacz-Kolanko enjoys the outdoors, traveling, and shopping.
 
Manish Mannan, M.B.B.S.
Medical College Amritear
Manish Mannan, M.B.B.S., received his medical degree from Medical College Amritear in Punjab, India. He chose the IU Methodist Family Medicine Residency because of its dedicated group of faculty and their commitment to clinical teaching, the diversity of the Residency, and the opportunity to continue his research interests in the molecular biology of breast cancer. His future goals include a fellowship in sports medicine and to remain in the academic field. When he is not working, Dr. Mannan enjoys playing table tennis, working out, and relaxing in the sun.

Anna Sagoyan, M.D.
Yerevan State Medical University
Anna Sagoyan, M.D., received her medical degree from Yerevan State Medical University. The academic curriculum of the IU Methodist Family Medicine Residency, with its strong commitment to community-based hospital resources, fits in with her future goal of working in a primary care/preventive medicine environment. Specifically, she plans to work in a multi-specialty group, providing care for the growing Russian-Armenian community. A member of CAP, her clinical interest is preventive medicine, while endocrinology is her research interest. When she is not working, Dr. Sagoyan enjoys her family, travel, books, and music.

Shahriar Setoudeh-Maram, M.D.
Shiraz Medical School Shiraz, Iran
Shahriar Setoudeh-Maram, M.D. received his medical degree from Shiraz Medical School Shiraz in Iran. Dr.  Setoudeh-Maram felt the IU Family Practice Residency was the best residency for him because of the friendly environment, strong program, university affiliation, and the diversity of the population being served. He plans to become a Family Practitioner focusing on sports medicine. Away from medicine, Dr. Setoudeh-Maram enjoys tennis, computers, traveling and spending time with his wife and parents.

Roopam Shyam, M.B.B.S.
G.R. Medical College
Roopam Shyam, M.B.B.S., received her medical degree from G.R. Medical College in Gwalior, India. Dr. Shyam joined the IU Family Practice Residency due to its high standards, teaching rounds, and well-organized university-based program. She was also impressed with its decent benefits, no scut work, and the residency director. Dr. Shyam's areas of clinical interest are geriatrics and women's health. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Dr. Shyam is married and has a baby daughter.  In her free time, she enjoys gardening, reading books and traveling.

Ricardo Valdivia, M.D.
San Marcos University Lima, Peru
Ricardo Valdivia, M.D., received his medical degree from San Marcos University in Lima, Peru. Working in direct patient care, prestigious university setting and the nice faculty members are just a few of the reasons Dr. Valdivia chose to do his residency at the IU Family Practice Residency. Dr. Valdivia  is an anesthesiologist and plans to practice Family Medicine in an underserved area. His clinical interests include Medicine, OB, and Pediatrics and focuses his research efforts on Pharmacology. Outside of work Dr. Valdivia enjoys soccer, swimming, and spending time with his family.

Lam T. Van, M.D.
Ross University

Lam T. Van, M.D., received his medical degree from Ross University in Dominica, West Indies. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Davis. He chose the IU Family Medicine Residency because of its highly structured curriculum, supportive staff, and nurturing faculty. He also looks forward to the teaching benefits of the university setting and its diverse patient population. Dr. Van’s clinical interests are geriatrics and preventive medicine, while his research interests include prevention of osteoporosis in the elderly population. His future goals are to obtain a fellowship in geriatrics and to maintain a balance between his hospital work and duties as a private clinician. When he is not working, Dr. Van enjoys skiing, road trips, and running.
