Underserved Medicine Educational Opportunities
The proportion of people who are
uninsured and medically underserved has continued to grow in the
United States in recent years. In the State of Indiana, budget
cuts and growing Medicaid restrictions are leaving greater
numbers of patients without resources for physical and mental
health care. As the population of uninsured and underinsured
steadily rises, insufficient numbers of trained physicians are
available to serve their clinical needs. In the United States
and locally in Indiana, physician-leaders are needed to serve
medically underserved populations, train future physicians for
leadership and service, advocate for the needs of the uninsured
and underinsured, and develop innovative systems to meet growing
health care needs.
The
Department of Family Medicine is actively engaged in meeting such
needs of medically underserved patients through clinical practice
and educational programs for practicing physicians, medical students
and residents, and programs for pre-medical students. Three of the
Department’s faculty completed Faculty Development Fellowships in
Underserved Medicine Leadership (Javier Sevilla, MD, Scott Renshaw,
MD, and Broderick Rhyant, MD), and lead a number of service and
educational opportunities for those interested in better meeting the needs
of underserved populations. Some example opportunities are listed
