Medical Education: Honduras Cultural Immersion

This is an immersion Spanish language study with onsite exposure to primary and community health care in a developing country.

This experience provides one-on-one instruction in the Spanish language, using the facilities of the Escuela de Idiomas Truxillo and the Salvador Parades Hospital in Trujillo, Honduras. Participants study Spanish language grammar and structure with strong emphasis on conversation. Due to the individualized nature of the instruction, students at any level of Spanish language knowledge are able to participate in this program.

Students learn about health care delivery in Honduras through observing/volunteering at the public hospital, interacting with Honduran health care professionals, and volunteering at local public and private health clinics. Program components include:

  • In-depth orientation sessions prior to departure
  • Observation of primary and community health care programs
  • Individual Spanish language instruction, 20 hours per week
  • Honduran family homestay
  • Variety of volunteer opportunities Special cultural activities

Dates
Departure date is Saturday, May 16, 2009. Participants MUST travel to Trujillo as a group on Saturday, May 16. There will be no exceptions to the departure date. Return dates are flexible. Each student determines own return date. More information on making flight arrangements will be given to students selected into the program.

Requirements
Application and interview required. If space permits, students, faculty, and staff of the Indiana University School of Medicine as well as non-IUSM students will be considered. Non-refundable $150 Program Fee for IU/IUSM affiliated participants required to secure placement once selected. Non-IU/IUSM participants pay a non-refundable $300 Program Fee.

Costs
Approximately $2200 covers a 4-week experience that includes: program fee, individual Spanish language instruction (20 hours/week), homestay with a Honduran family, most meals, required texts, airport pickup & travel costs to Trujillo, special cultural activities and hotel/transportation/exit costs on return trip. Not included: necessary immunizations and personal weekend or end-of-trip travel expenses.

Sr. Cardona is the Director of the Escuela de Idiomas Truxillo in Trujillo, Honduras; Dr. Sevilla, originally from Trujillo, Honduras, is faculty with the IUSM Department of Family Medicine; Ms. Custer, former Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras, is the Program Manager for the ENLACE Program at the IUSM Department of Family Medicine.
