Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship
Fellows are exposed to coverage of Indianapolis
Colts football, Division I collegiate, high school, and special events
athletics. There is also an affiliation with the National Institute for
Fitness and Sport (NIFS), the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) through the Health and Sciences Department, and the National High
School Federation. Fellows will also work with an interdisciplinary team
to provide comprehensive primary care as it relates to physical
activity, initial assessment and treatment, manipulation therapy,
nutrition and counseling and computerized fitness testing. This
fellowship is an accredited ACGME-approved program*.

Year 2010 Application Deadline
The sports medicine fellow will have a unique opportunity to experience primary care sports medicine in a variety of settings from the leaders in the field. The Fellow will work closely with Douglas B. McKeag M.D., M.S., OneAmerica Professor of Preventive Health Medicine and Director, Indiana University Center for Sports Medicine. Dr. McKeag is nationally recognized in the field, a well-published researcher, and one of the founders of AMSSM (American Medical Society for Sports Medicine).
The Fellow will have many responsibilities including coverage of the
many national professional and amateur sporting events that come to
Indianapolis. The city is the home to the NCAA headquarters, ACSM
(American College of Sports Medicine), National High School Federation,
and numerous professional, collegiate, and high school teams. He/She
will have primary coverage of a high school, cover Division I Indiana
University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), and coverage for
the Indianapolis Colts' training camp, under the supervision of primary
care sports medicine physicians. The Fellow will also be caring for
sports injuries in a variety of settings including multiple primary care
sports medicine clinics and training rooms. Additionally, the fellow
will work with the well-respected orthopedic surgery specialists at
nearby Methodist Sports Medicine.
The sports medicine fellow will have opportunity to learn from primary care sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons specializing in sports medicine, sports physical therapists, athletic trainers in clinical, practical, and didactic settings. Educational experiences will also include attendance and presentation at weekly sports medicine grand rounds, monthly sports medicine wellness series, sports medicine discussion groups, journal clubs, and musculoskeletal radiology rounds. The Fellow will become an expert in primary care sports medicine evaluation and assessment of disease/injury as well as prevention, and long-term rehabilitation plans.
Numerous lectures in a variety of settings will be given by the
Fellow including presentations to the family medicine and internal
medicine residents at Indiana University in order to stimulate more
knowledge and enthusiasm in the field. The Fellow will also be
encouraged to submit cases and/or abstracts for presentation at national
sports medicine conferences. The fellowship involves a research project
which may be in any area of interest in sports medicine. Community
service is critical when functioning as a professional and the fellow is
expected to serve at area events and learn to incorporate community
resources into the practice of sports medicine. The Fellow will also
have regular family medicine continuity clinics to maintain valuable
primary care skills. Fellows trained in this setting will be prepared to
become leaders in the field of primary care sports medicine, and become
extremely comfortable in any academic environment.

Objectives

those engaged in sports and exercise at an expert level while
maintaining and building on primary care abilities.

Rotation Schedule - 12 Month Format
Musculoskeletal Radiology (1 month)... Dr. Meyer / Centers

Goals:
- Develop systematic approach to reading plain radiographs (bone)
- Use of appropriate radiological testing for suspected pathology
- Become proficient at reading MRI and CTs
Methods:
- Block rotation time spent with teaching radiology staff

Evaluation:
- Proficiency testing per SM faculty
- Formal evaluation completed by radiology staff (Buckwalter / Farber)
Knee (1 month)... Drs. Klootwyk / Ritter
Goals:
- High volume exposure to patient population predominantly with knee pathology
- Develop proficiency in knee physical exam and clinical diagnosis of knee
disorders
- Exposure to anatomic pathology in operating room
Methods:
- Block rotation time spent with orthopedic surgeons specializing in knee
- Recommended reading: Principles and Practice of Orthopedic Sports Medicine,
Garrett, et. al.
Evaluation:
- Proficiency testing of physical exam and diagnostic skills per SM staff

Shoulder (1 month)... Dr. Misamore
Goals:
- High volume exposure to patient population predominantly with shoulder
pathology
- Develop proficiency in shoulder physical exam and clinical diagnosis of
shoulder disorders
- Exposure to anatomic pathology in operating room
Methods:
- Block rotation time spent with orthopedic surgeons specializing in shoulder
- Recommended reading: Shoulder Injuries in the Athlete, Hawkins & Misamore
Evaluation:
- Proficiency testing of physical exam and diagnostic skills per SM staff

Hand / Wrist / General Orthopedics (2 months)... Dr. Rettig

- High volume exposure to patient population predominantly with hand and wrist
pathology
- Develop proficiency in hand and wrist physical exam and clinical diagnosis of
hand and wrist disorders
- Exposure to anatomic pathology in operating room

wrist

Compensation
Current Salaries for 2009-10, effective July 1, 2009 (salaries and
benefits are subject to change; ask for an update when you interview)
for Sports Medicine fellows is $48,846 for PGY4 and $50,146 for PGY5.
